Better. Not more.

What happens, if you start with the question what „buen vivir“ (good life) is all about? You probably end up with the commons. 🙂

At least, that’s what seems to have happened to kontent films and the Edge Funders Alliance (love this: „If you are not at the edge, you take too much space in the middle.“)

  1. What happens, if you start with the question what “buen vivir” (good life) is all about? You probably end up with the commons

Or you could start to radicalice the slogan of sustainable developement by formulating its perspectiv in a way like „for everybody it shall be possible, to live a good life everywhere – without, however, to be forced to undermine the basic means of livelehood“ – to end with a social streerage of production that is bassed on a world common sustainability management.😉. .

  2. Why better? What for? If ‚better‘ is a means in itself, it is the same as ‚more‘ in a fresh costume. I don’t want a better life all the time.

      • Yes my life does effect the lives of others. Still the question remains: Why should I have a better life? What for does it have to improve?

IMO there is one thing that makes the good things go to hell. It’s not capitalism (whatever that is) or neoliberalism (…) but the widespread idea of a brighter future, where my life is better than it is now. This idea keeps devaluating what I am and have now. I don’t want a better life. (What about a worse life? I will think about that.)

I know I am simplifying but the above video does this as well, so it seems an appropriate reaction.

      • What for does it have to improve?

In my opinion the – perhaps common – point is to become aware of the fact, that you never live isolated from the lives of others or of future generations – no matter if you consider your life as fine enough, good, better or worse, That’s why I refer to future termes of a global togetherness on the ground of a common sustainability management. The different views of a good oder a better live, of whats enought or what is too much, have to be confronted with the socio-ecological costs to realise the wanted levels.

  3. Torsten, if I wouldn’t know where you come frome I would say: „young, white, Middle-Europe“ – by only reading your reasoning

And, OF COURSE a five minutes video that simply draws attention to a problem and an upcoming notion is simplifying, I mean: what are you criticizing here?

    • Silke, I am critizing the thinness of the term or concept „better life“. In the above video I can see only bubbles (not that I mind bubbles). And I critzice how (not that!) the phantasy „people want to live well, they don’t want to have too much“ is used as a base for a social movement. Sorry for being so short, I don’t have the time now to be really constructive.

  4. Torsten, just to put this into context. „Better life“ is vid title choosen by a film crew. Nobody in the movement would really think that this is the „basis for a social movement“, I think. So, I get your point, but just consider the context.
